What started in 1984 as a humble effort to house Orange County families experiencing homelessness has since grown into one of Orange County’s most impactful nonprofits. Last year, Families Forward improved the lives of more than 13,000 residents across OC.
The Irvine-based group’s mission is to prevent and end family homelessness by providing access to housing and resources that create lasting stability, including food assistance, career coaching, mental health counseling and financial literacy education.
At the Families Forward 40th anniversary celebration event held last month, the organization honored long-serving board member and former Chairman Roger Grable with its prestigious Margie Wakeham Legacy Award. Wakeham was the organization’s CEO for 26 years. Irvine Company was also honored for its 40-year relationship with the nonprofit.
“It all started with Irvine Company,” says Madelynn Hirneise, CEO of Families Forward, recalling that the Company’s donation of two houses in East Irvine helped launch the organization. “We’re so grateful for that partnership and that it continues to grow today.”
“I recall my son and I spending our weekends renovating the ranch houses for families,” says former Irvine Company SVP Michael LeBlanc. “It was a special moment in the history of the city and Company.”
Irvine Company employees still dedicate their time and energy volunteering for Families Forward, and the Company continues as one of the nonprofit’s housing partners.
