Electric vehicle owners in Irvine have a growing number of options to charge up. Thanks to efforts by the city and private companies, there are now more than 1,000 public chargers available throughout the city, placing Irvine among the top five cities in California for EV infrastructure.
This expansion is part of Irvine’s ambitious goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Adding chargers
To make charging more accessible, the city has expanded charging options at popular locations such as the Great Park, which now has 166 chargers, and the Civic Center. All of these improvements are geared toward making it more convenient for residents to switch to electric vehicles.
At the Trabuco Senior Center, the city installed fast chargers that can charge a vehicle for up to 100 miles in 10 minutes.
Private businesses such as Irvine Company are contributing as well, adding charging stations at supermarket parking lots, regional shopping centers, as well as at its office and apartment communities. At Irvine Spectrum Center, there are more than a half dozen fast chargers from national charging operators.
State’s best
As a result, Irvine now has 1,025 chargers, the fourth-highest number in the state, behind Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose. That figure amounts to approximately 300 residents per charger, which puts Irvine in the top position for chargers per capita in California.
