Child-sized dream homes – including a surf shack, a Barbie-themed house, a dog house and a modern farmhouse – have transformed the Giant Wheel Lawn at Irvine Spectrum Center into a whimsical neighborhood.
The custom-designed playhouses are part of the highly anticipated return of Project Playhouse, a beloved fundraiser that has been on hiatus since 2012. This year’s playhouses will be on display until Oct. 5, when they will be auctioned off at HomeAid’s 35th anniversary party. Playhouse tours are available Oct. 5 at the Spectrum Center for $5 per person and free for children 5 and under.
HomeAid Orange County revived the event this year to celebrate its 35th anniversary and raise awareness for affordable housing.
Local builders have played a key role in bringing Project Playhouse to life, contributing their skills and creativity to design and build the miniature homes on display. This year’s event features builder teams from City Ventures, LIM Living, New Home Co., Shea Homes, Toll Brothers and TriPointe Homes.
“Project Playhouse is not just an event; it is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose,” says Gina Cunningham, executive director of HomeAid Orange County. “The funds raised will directly support HomeAid’s mission to help individuals and families experiencing homelessness rebuild their lives. The only way to end homelessness is through housing, and we believe every human deserves a safe and dignified place to call home.”
HomeAid Orange County was founded in 1989 with the goal of ending homelessness by leveraging trades within the building industry. Its first housing project was a renovation of an Irvine farmhouse in 1989.
