Russell Peters, who was recently named as one of Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Comics of All Time, will perform at Irvine Improv from Aug. 8 to 11. Since first taking the stage at age 19, Peters has been awarded Gemini, Peabody and Emmy awards. We asked Peters about his upcoming show.
How has your comedy evolved?
I think it’s more personal now. I still talk about race and culture, but some of the stories are more about my day-to-day life and how I see the world as a man coming into his mid-50s.
How do you tailor performances?
Some audiences are more reserved than others, but if they’re at my show, they came to see me and know what I do. I always make sure to include local references and try to get an understanding of some of the dynamics of how the different communities interact in different countries and cities.
What was your biggest career turning point?
The biggest turning point would have to be when my ‘Comedy Now!’ special was released in 2004. That’s the special that got chopped up and sent around the world.
What can fans expect from your upcoming show?
Well, they can watch me work out my new act and my new material. It’s a work in progress.
