Irish traditional music band Danú, which has thrilled Celtic music lovers around the globe for three decades, will perform March 20 at Irvine Barclay Theatre. We asked founding member Benny McCarthy about the upcoming concert.

What makes performing in the U.S. special for you?

There is a huge connection between Ireland and the American people, and we enjoy bringing our culture on tour there. Many people have Irish roots going back generations. We really enjoy California, and it is always a joy to get to Southern California. We had a great time in Irvine in 2019, so we are excited to come back for a concert as part of this tour.

What can we expect from your Irvine concert?

Our performance will feature very lively Irish dance tunes alongside some beautiful songs in both the Irish and English languages, plenty of fun and stories in between pieces, and we encourage the audience to join in. It will be a magical, musical journey where we will transport everyone back to Ireland for the evening for a joyous Irish session.

What makes Irish music unique?

Irish music is like our language and, like all folk traditions, is based on the people. We look forward to sharing our Irish traditions and stories.

What’s one Irish tune everyone should hear at least once?

Check out ‘The Kilfenora Jig.’ It’s a great old tune, and it’s very difficult not to tap your foot or clap along to it. We’ll give it a good rendition on the night.
