In September, plants’ water needs drop by approximately 30% even if the temperature is hot. Because the days are shorter, evaporation decreases. Plus, plants begin to go into a dormant phase where they need less water. This rapid drop in water needs will continue in October and November.

So this month is a great time to be water wise and adjust your sprinklers. The Irvine Ranch Water District recommends watering your lawn four days a week during September, with two cycles of three minutes each. For climate appropriate plants, water two days a week with two 3-minute cycles. Go to IRWD.com/watering-guide for details.
